Recertification Services for Helicopter Longlines and Short-Haul Ropes

Recertification

Barry provides recertification of longlines and short-haul ropes made by Barry or by others. The recertification process covers the complete assembly (including textile and metal components).

Break-tests for residual tensile strength on products submitted are performed and third-party certified by SGS.

Barry does not recertify helicopter cargo nets but will repair the cargo nets as necessary. Cargo nets repair kits are available from Barry and repair instructions are available from the Barry website (http://www.barry.ca/technical-data-sheet/rt-barry-helinet-repair-guidelines.pdf).

Products submitted for recertification must have:

  • Legible identification markings which include date of manufacture, serial number, manufacturer identification, working load limit (WLL) rating and any warning labels provided at purchase.
  • Complete record of use and inspection documentation (if available). These documents are required in order to minimize recertification time and cost.
  • Up-to-date inspection from the original manufacturer and written proof that the specific product is not under a recall notice.
Normative references:
  • ASTM E-4 - 09 : Standard Practices for Force Verification of Testing Machines
  • CGSB 40-GP-1M : Methods of Sampling and Testing Cordage
  • CI 1401-06 : Safer Use of Fiber Rope
  • CI 2001-04 : Fiber Rope Inspection and Retirement Criteria

Recertification process:

Make sure that all documentation is available (logbook, up-to-date inspection sheet and proof that product is not under a recall).
Complete a visual and tactile inspection documented by notes and photographs. Cut off a 3 m (10 ft) end section: Splice the free end and perform a break test to reveal residual tensile strength. Compare results versus rope and hardware in new condition. Re-qualify WLL as per results and observations. The product will be recertified to the design factor specified by the customer (ex: 7:1, 10:1, etc). Re-splice one (or both) end(s) of the longline. Wash and re-coat with Barrythane UV shield and replace damaged metal components if required (at extra cost). Re-label. Issue a new Certificate of Conformity. Update log book entry kept at Barry offices.

Shipping instructions:

  • Call Barry to discuss schedule and requirement.
  • Obtain a return authorization number from Barry
  • Ship prepaid to Barry with all required product documentation
  • Recertification process may take 2 to 6 weeks depending on line diameter and quantity.

Machine Guarding Nets

Characteristics :

This protection product is used for ensuring employee safety and stopping projectiles.

The advantages of this product lie in the price (lower than metallic guards), the weight (lower than metallic guards) and maintenance (easy to open for maintenance operations).

This product is offered in different sizes depending on its use. Frequently, we make safety nets for conveyor protection (including protection for re-entrant angles) with dimensions of 7 feet (2.13 meters) x 17.5 feet (5.33 meters). These net dimensions are often used to meet efficiency requirements.

For any other need in equipment protection, net components and dimensions are easy to customize. For example, some paper mills use a model designed to meet their particular standards.

The selection of net components used for manufacturing is done according to different physical properties. We do structural testing such as tearing tests, which are established by standards such as ASTM D5034 and ASTM D1117.

In order to comply with these regulations, we offer a fastener system that allows the net to be opened with only one tool. Generally, a Torx tool is recommended.

We also offer other accessories such as metallic doors integrated in the nets, sliding metallic access doors, metallic access doors with hinges, clamp devices for open nets, spools, etc.

We do the design, manufacturing and installation of these protection products. To date, we have made and installed about 8,500 linear feet (2,590 meters) of safety netting for various equipment (conveyors, projectile stopping in mines, dryers in paper mills, billet-cutting centers, etc.)
